Uncle Buc Retires

On the 5th December 2009, Steve Buchanan (pictured left), fondly known as 'Uncle Buc', played his last function with the African Skye Pipe Band. After threatening to retire for the last few years, Steve finally took the step.

That same day was the Annual Band Party where, a small presentation ceremony took place for Steve. We were fortunate enough to get all the leading drummers that Steve had played under to come along and say a few words.

First up was Allan Mcluckie (pictured below right) to talk about Steve's involvement with the Cosy Corner Pipes and Drums. Next up was Rodger Metelerkamp (pictured below left), whom Steve played under in the Witwatersrand Rifles Pipe Band. Last, but not least, was Steven St Clair-Hall (pictured further below right) whom Steve served under in the latter years of the Witwatersrand Rifles Pipe Band and then during his African Skye Pipe Band days.

Uncle Buc committed some 34 years of loyalty, and time, to the pipe bands he played in. From the practice room to the parade ground, the competition field to the concert stage, Uncle Buc was always there making more than just a contribution. His zany ways, and tremendous sense of humour, as well as all he brought to the Band musically, will be sorely missed. His niece, Taryn Townsend, sums up pretty well what Uncle Buc meant to all of us in the Band with her words below.

"Weekends growing up as a child, consisted of spending 90% of my time at the Wit Rifles Regiment in Germiston. My favourite part of the regiment was definitely watching the pipe band, whether it was their practice, a parade or a function at the regiment, this was my favourite part and I remember going home each time and saying to my parents that I wanted to be just like my uncle and play in the band. So when Rory called my folks in 1996 saying that they were putting together a learner programme, I jumped at the opportunity to learn to play the drum, just like my uncle. Unfortunately, growing up in my younger years, Steve and I were never really as close as we are now. Just like Rodger (Metelerkamp) fetched Steve and Steve fetched Rory for practices, Steve would fetch me and we would travel to practice together. It definitely was a win-win, because I got a lift to practice and I didn't have to drag my folks out of the house late at night and Steve was then a bachelor, so he enjoyed the home cooked meals that I would make.

Last year (2009) I realised that I have been playing drums for half my life - which is not as long as Steve has, but I certainly intend to play for as long as he has. Two of my proudest moments would have to be placing in various competitions as a Grade 2 drum corps and the wins that we have pulled off! However my proudest moment would have to be in October last year after I participated in the South African Solo Drumming Championships. Unfortunately due to the date being moved, Steve was unable to attend as he went away with the family. After participating and receiving my scoresheet, I was totally dumbfounded when I had placed, among 12 TOP South African players, including great members of my own drum corps, 4TH! I smsed Steve to let him know all the results, including my own and his sms back said: "Tarrie, that is so Awesome! I'm so proud of you!" There were some other comments about the "Guppies" (The Sharks were playing in the semi-finals of the Currie Cup that day and unfortunately lost to the Bulls) - but thats not relevant! A week or two later when we visited him, he said: "Let me give you a hug Tarrie, I'm so proud of you, you did really well" That certainly has been the highlight of my drumming career (so far) and I hope that I will be able to continue making Steve proud!

Steve, you have been an inspiration to many, and certainly to me. I know that EVERYONE has many stories about you and the times that they have shared with you. Although you will be deeply missed, your family (and friends), and my special godchild are VERY lucky to have you as a dad, uncle, friend and confidant. I look forward to reading your score sheet on the Grade 2 drum corps, because I know that you have the potential to judge it, maybe not next year, but certainly soon. Thank you for all the special times - I will ALWAYS love you!"
